About This Phone

This is what a brand new Manhattan rope shaft candlestick would have looked like in 1899. This one has been carefully re-nickled to bring it back to the way it looked when it was new. It has the small Manhattan seal on the transmitter and an outside terminal long pole receiver sitting on a forked switch hook. Beautiful telephone in otherwise original condition. The scan is from an original ad in the November 21, 1899 issue of Electrical World & Engineer magazine. Manhattan, like most other manufacturers, moved from a watch case receiver to a long pole or smaller pony receiver around the turn of the century.
