Gray Pay Telephone

About This Phone

Wooden coin-operated pay telephone circa 1898, built around William Gray’s patented secure pay-phone mechanism. Gray’s design was licensed to many phone manufacturers; by the early 1900s these instruments were fixtures in hotels, grocery stores, and restaurants — serving business and emergency communication needs in an era before residential telephones were common. Made in Hartford, Connecticut.
