Automatic ElectricAutomatic Electric1901–1955Automatic Electric Company was an American telephone equipment supplier primarily for independent telephone companies in North America, but also had a worldwide presence. With its line of automatic telephone exchanges, it was also a long-term supplier of switching equipment to the Bell System, starting in 1919. The company was the largest manufacturing unit of the Automatic Electric Group. In 1955, the company was acquired by General Telephone and Electronics (GT&E). About The Model 40

The AE 40 is probably the most recognized and collected Automatic Electric phone. Made from bakelite, it was produced from 1939 through the 1950s. The AE 40 made a cameo appearance in the 1999 movie, The Matrix. Usually labelled 'Monophone' on base.

Variations: Plain black or colored bakelite body; silver, brass or gold brushed handset bands and finger wheels, butler's handle, deluxe extensicord.
